Inclusive dates, containment and non-overlap

Date ranges include both endpoints. An empty end means open-ended, not “inactive”. Local dates are sent as date strings; the backend's current date controls status eligibility.

Rules by record type

RecordEnforced temporal rule
EmploymentStart not before original hire; no overlap with another employment
AssignmentInside linked employment; no overlapping primary assignment for the employee
CompensationInside linked employment; no overlapping base-pay agreement
Benefit enrolmentInside linked employment; no overlapping same-plan period
Dependant / work authorisationEnd not before effective start
QualificationExpiry not before award when both entered
DocumentExpiry not before issue when both entered

Probation, confirmation and last-working dates must fit the employment. Closing a parent cannot strand an open or later-ending contained record.

  1. Read the parent employment and all affected dated records.
  2. Agree the actual change date.
  3. End predecessor records the day before a successor begins.
  4. Save and verify each closure.
  5. Add the successor linked to the correct employment.
  6. Reopen related tabs and verify the final timeline.

These are separate saves, not one multi-record transaction in the browser. If a later save fails, earlier closures can already be committed. Reload actual state and complete the remaining approved change; do not assume rollback.

A future end date can make the browser show Closed / ended / inactive now because its marker checks for an entered end date. It does not calculate whether that date has arrived. Inspect the date itself.

Payroll service periods need a single covering employment, assignment and compensation record. A valid HR change mid-period can therefore require split Payroll input periods; see Payroll handoff.
