Select managers and prevent reporting cycles

Manager references belong to effective-dated assignments. They use Employee IDs, not Party IDs, usernames or User IDs. The picker searches employee numbers and the backend requires an accessible manager record.

Procedure

  1. Confirm the intended reporting line and effective period.
  2. Open the assignment editor and use the manager picker.
  3. Search the manager's employee number and verify the selected identity.
  4. Check the proposed period against employment and existing assignments.
  5. Save with the required assignment change reason.
  6. Reopen the saved assignment to verify the manager reference and dates.

The service follows manager paths across overlapping assignment periods, including indirect cycles. It is not enough that the selected manager differs from the employee: a longer loop is also invalid. Self-reporting is rejected.

The current manager check ensures accessible identity and cycle-free paths. Do not assume it independently requires the selected manager to be ACTIVE with a current employment for every assignment date. Verify the organisation's approved manager eligibility; an available picker entry is not complete business approval.

Changing a reporting line

For a real dated organisational change, prefer closing the predecessor assignment and adding a successor as described in Assignments. Editing a past row corrects that row; it does not create a frozen previous revision automatically.

If a save fails, inspect the other dated assignments along the proposed path and agree the correct structure. Renaming a person or selecting a similarly named account cannot remove a cycle. Do not rewrite unrelated historical reporting lines to make a new assignment pass.
